In life's ups and downs, being a mom shows the unexpected, the tough, and the really beautiful.

Popular author Shivangi Sharma once said something that perfectly captures the heart of this journey: "I thought I had parenting all sorted out... until I had a baby."

As a mom herself, Shivangi's words connect with the shared experience of navigating the challenges of raising a child. Her experience reflects the reality many moms go through—a journey full of surprises, moments of joy and sorrow, and a love that knows no limits. In her honest reflections, she reveals the true story of transforming from a confident person to a humble and strong mom who learns, adjusts, and embraces the unpredictability of raising a child.

Shivangi’s book is the #1 parenting bestseller in India. We are grateful for being able to bring it closer to you, and to give you a sneak peek of what to expect, sharing also the disclaimer on Shivangi's website:

  1. This book won’t teach you parenting because no book can. It will entertain you for sure.
  2. No babies were left unattended when this book was being written. (They had iPads)
  3. I forgot what the third point was. Damn you, mommy brain!

“It’s okay, Mama” - Excerpt from Shivangi's book

So my Mama and I are both new to this parenting - getting parented game. But unlike me, Mama did try to prepare herself from her end before I came. She read the available literature, talked to fellow parents, her parents, formed some rules, and weighed the good and the bad; so she could face everything head on.

I, on the other hand, just showed up. Now I can’t talk, the world is new, and I don’t come with a user manual. I just have a few different types of cries and some squeaks and laughs to communicate. I don’t know beforehand what I will like or dislike, so I give my opinion at run time, and I have always been very vocal about that. Mama has been working hard at decoding all of that and educating everyone around all this time.

Through all the hits and trials over this period, many times Mama thought she had really nailed it. But more often than not I would leave her completely clueless. And those were the times she felt guilty as hell.

For all those helpless times, I just want to say that:  It’s okay, Mama.

Remember when you just couldn’t figure out if I was hot or cold at night? You thought that I was waking up in the night because of the chill and you put me in a very warm sleeping bag?  The plan backfired as I woke up with a rash all over because of overheating. You berated yourself a million times for that, until everything got fine (which it did the very next day). You didn’t need to stress out that much, Mama!

The other time when I would just refuse to eat even when you knew I was hungry? There was nothing wrong with what you did, Mama. I was just not in a mood. You didn’t have to make a big deal about it. There was no need to feel all that pressure from others. I was back on track in no time, and all was good.

Once when you accidentally flapped your hand on my cheek when I was wiggling too much? You cried more than me, Mama. You didn’t even notice the surprise look on my face thinking ‘What the hell is wrong with her’? I am tougher than you think and I absolutely don’t keep any grudges.

The times when you yelled out of helplessness or the times when you just let me cry for a few minutes to take a breather? Chill, Mama. My tiny mind has a very short-lived memory, and I am not going to remember all this. You are just a human, and I sure can be a little devil sometimes.

The nights when you didn’t change my diaper in the wee hours out of tiredness and the nights you had that odd cup of coffee that supposedly got me too excited? Everything is long forgotten, Mama. My world moves pretty quick, as I have to see and learn new things every day.

The split second when you turned your gaze away from me and I decided to dive from the bed? How badly you wanted to go back in time to save me from the fall!  You know that is not the last fall I will have, right? Or the time when you bumped my head while throwing me in the air? Please don’t stop doing that, Mama. That is still my favorite sport!

All these times you have sulked more than I have. You have apologized to me more than I cared. You have felt like a bad Mama more than you have patted your own back.

I am not judging your performance here, so you should stop doing that too. It’s time to let go, feel confident that you are doing the right thing, and enjoy that damn cup of coffee.

Because it really is okay, Mama.

(Issued in agreement with fellow babies and in the general interest of their stressed-out, doting Mamas – please give yourselves a break!)
